How does humanity survive in a world when people are falling prey to ideas like the Earth being flat?

It scares me when people can't use enough common sense to put everything they encounter in life together to understand the world they live in. It scares me when things have gotten so bad that people no longer trust the vast majority of human consensus in the world and see society as out to scam them. What do you do when there is no reasoning with people and they somehow think they are the small minority of enlightened ones in the world that is somehow full of mythical things like the Earth being a sphere with thousands of historical figures throughout history lending evidence to the fact.

I thought this was just a big joke until I actually just met a real person who completely believes in this flat earther garbage.

How do we have hope in a time when the world is moving backwards in human consciousness and backwards in progress?

Sadly if people get indoctrinated into things strongly enough by their families or communities they'll believe anything no matter how ridiculous. I think this is because people are taught from when they're children to obey; to do as they're told and to live life a certain way. People aren't being taught to think for themselves, to rule over their own lives. In fact to really go outside the box is discouraged in just about every aspect of life. So it's no wonder that when they're presented with "facts" from their authority figures they'll believe them hook line and sinker.

The best way to counter that besides infinite patience is to present them with things that are slightly outside their realm of understanding but still close enough to make sense to them. Just anything to make them question and think about stuff; like how if the world is flat do you fly around the world in a plane. Japan, Frankfurt, New York, Los Angeles, Hawaii, back to Japan. On a flat earth I would think it would be impossible to do that; yet millions of people do just that. I also don't think solar eclipses could occur on a flat earth. Anything you present to people like that must be easy to verify and make perfect sense even in their limited world view. Preferably stuff they can check themselves or that they'll have friends who have seen it or heard about it being true. That's still not fool proof, but I've had some success with doing things like that.

That wasn't my experience yesterday. I have no idea why she believes this but I read conversations on her profile with her other friends that were trying to convince her. Even confronted with logical arguments like flying around the world, or why would a conspiracy start hundreds of years ago as map makers had to compensate for the curvature of the Earth? Even confronted with all this and more, she was firmly sticking to her belief.
If you show her a video taken from high up in the atmosphere or space showing a curve, the answer is that it is a fisheye lens and to prove that it's flat, her evidence is another video high up in the atmosphere showing it to be flat. Well if one lens curve can be fake, don't you think another can be? This was ignored by her and she was totally serious about it. Things are just getting loony out there.

Wow, that's really crazy! You're right, some people can't be shaken from their false beliefs no matter what we do. She's one of the more hard core people I've heard of recently. Things are overall getting very crazy, it's up to us to try our best to counter it when and where possible.
